Get ready for a tale of courage, giant birds, and sparkling treasures!

Setting Sail from Basra

Sinbad lived in a beautiful, sunny city called Basra, right by the sparkly, blue sea. He had a magnificent ship, painted in bright colours, with sails as white as fluffy clouds, ready to catch the wind. His crew were all jolly and excited, singing sea shanties as they prepared for their grand adventure. One warm morning, the air was buzzing with excitement! Sinbad, wearing his favourite sailor's hat, stood proudly at the helm. He gave the order, and the big, heavy anchor was lifted with a mighty 'clunk!' The ship slowly, ever so slowly, pulled away from the bustling harbour, its colourful flags fluttering like happy butterflies in the gentle breeze. The people on the shore waved goodbye, and Sinbad waved back, his heart full of courage and curiosity. He couldn't wait to see what amazing islands and friendly creatures they would discover across the vast, blue ocean!

The Whale Island and the Giant Roc

The ship sailed on and on, for many, many days. The sun shone brightly, and the waves made a lovely ‘swish-swish’ sound against the boat. Sinbad and the sailors saw all sorts of wonderful things: colourful fish that shimmered like jewels, and playful dolphins leaping high out of the water! One sunny afternoon, they spotted a brand new island! It was so green and inviting, with what looked like soft, sandy beaches. “What a perfect place to stretch our legs!” exclaimed Sinbad. The sailors agreed, and they carefully steered their ship towards the shore. Everyone jumped off, happy to be on solid ground again after so much time at sea. They decided to have a little picnic and light a small fire to cook some fish they’d caught. But as soon as the fire began to crackle and glow, the 'island' began to rumble! Not just a little wobble, but a HUGE, mighty shake! The ground beneath them started to move, and then it plunged downwards into the deep, blue sea! Oh dear! It wasn't an island at all! It was a gigantic, sleepy whale, so enormous that its back looked just like a patch of land! The whale, woken up by the tickly fire, decided it was time for a swim! Splash! Sinbad was tumbled into the water! He held onto a piece of wood from the ship, and floated for a long, long time, until he gently washed up on a different, quiet beach. This new island was very strange. There were no trees, just tall, tall grass and a funny, giant, white mountain in the middle. As Sinbad got closer, he realised it wasn't a mountain at all! It was an enormous, perfectly round egg! It was bigger than any egg he had ever seen, even bigger than his ship! Suddenly, the sky above him grew dark. A shadow, bigger than a cloud, passed over. It was the mama bird, a magnificent, giant Roc, flying back to her nest! She was truly massive, with feathers like midnight and eyes like amber. Sinbad had a very clever idea. When the great bird landed near its enormous egg, Sinbad quickly, but quietly, used his strong turban to tie himself to one of the Roc's giant legs! Whoosh! With a powerful beat of her wings, the Roc lifted into the sky! Sinbad held on tight, soaring higher and higher, above the fluffy white clouds, on a brand new adventure!

Stranded in the Valley of Diamonds

Up, up, up went Sinbad, holding on tightly to the Roc's feathery leg! The wind whistled past his ears and the world below got smaller and smaller. He saw fluffy white clouds that looked like giant cotton wool, and the big, blue ocean stretched out like a sparkly blanket. It was an amazing, but rather wobbly, ride! After what felt like a very, very long time, the giant Roc started to fly downwards, swooping and swirling towards a deep, dark valley. Sinbad peered over the edge. The valley was enormous, with steep, rocky walls that scraped the sky. But what made his eyes go wide was what he saw sparkling at the bottom! The whole valley floor was covered in diamonds! Big, glittering diamonds, small, twinkling diamonds, diamonds of every shape and size, catching the sunlight and shining like a million tiny stars. Now, Sinbad knew that something so beautiful must have a secret. And he was right! As the Roc finally landed with a gentle thump, Sinbad quickly untied himself from her leg and hid behind a huge, sparkly rock. He watched as the enormous bird carefully picked up something with her giant beak – it wasn't a diamond, it was a giant snake! Oh dear! This valley wasn't just pretty, it was full of slithery, scaly surprises! The Roc then flew away, leaving Sinbad all alone in the diamond-filled valley. How would he ever get out? The walls were too high to climb, and he certainly didn't want to meet any more giant snakes. He wandered around, feeling a little bit lost, but still marvelling at all the twinkling treasures. He carefully picked up a few of the brightest diamonds and put them in his pockets, just in case. As the sun began to dip low in the sky, Sinbad heard a strange noise. *Caw, caw, caw!* He looked up and saw some very large, very hungry-looking birds circling high above the valley. And then he remembered something he’d heard long ago, a story about this very valley! People used to throw huge pieces of meat down into the diamond valley. The diamonds would stick to the sticky meat, and then giant eagles, or other enormous birds, would swoop down to grab the meat and fly away with it, back to their nests! When the merchants, who were waiting up on the cliffs, saw the birds carry the meat to their nests, they would scare the birds away and collect all the diamonds! ‘Aha!’ thought Sinbad. ‘Perhaps I can use this clever trick to get out of here too!’ He looked around for something big and meaty, but all he could see were more rocks and a few colourful flowers. He certainly didn't want to become a snack for a giant bird! Then, Sinbad had a brilliant idea! He took off his big, strong turban and carefully piled all the diamonds he could find onto it. He wrapped the turban around himself, making himself look like a big, lumpy bundle. He then lay down flat on the ground, right in the middle of a big, juicy-looking patch of fake meat, hoping a hungry bird would mistake him for its next meal! It was a very brave, but also a very silly, plan! He waited and waited. The sun completely disappeared, and the moon shone like a silver coin in the dark sky. Still nothing. Sinbad was just about to give up when a giant shadow fell over him. A huge, eagle-like bird, with feathers the colour of a stormy sky and eyes like shiny beads, swooped down! It grabbed hold of Sinbad's lumpy, diamond-covered turban with its strong talons! Up, up, up he went again, soaring out of the deep valley and into the night sky! Sinbad held his breath, trying not to wiggle too much. The wind was cold, but he was so excited! He was finally leaving the valley of glittering diamonds and slithery snakes! The giant bird flew for a while, higher and higher, until it landed on a rocky ledge high up on the mountain. And guess what? There were people there! Not just any people, but merchants, just like in the story, who were waiting for the birds to bring them the diamonds! The merchants were very surprised to see a lumpy bundle of diamonds that suddenly moved! Sinbad quickly unwrapped himself and smiled. ‘Hello!’ he said. ‘I’m Sinbad, and I’m afraid I’ve used your clever trick to get out of that valley!’ The merchants looked at him, then at the diamonds, then back at Sinbad, and then they all started to laugh! They thought it was the most amazing thing they had ever seen! Sinbad told them all about his adventures, about the whale island, the giant Roc, and the valley of sparkling diamonds. The merchants were so impressed and so happy to have found such a brave and clever man, and so many diamonds, that they offered to help him. Sinbad was no longer alone and stranded. He had found new friends, and a way to continue his journey back home, across the big, wide ocean. But what adventures would he have next? We’ll find out soon!

Rescue and Return to Basra

So, Sinbad was no longer alone! He was safe and sound with the kind merchants, the very same men who had been throwing down those big, juicy pieces of meat into the sparkling Valley of Diamonds. Imagine their surprise when, instead of just a diamond stuck to a piece of meat, they found Sinbad himself, holding onto a huge, glittering gemstone! They couldn't believe their eyes! Sinbad, feeling a bit wobbly but so very happy, told them his incredible story. He explained how he had fallen into the valley, how the giant birds called Rocs flew overhead, and how he’d bravely come up with the clever idea to tie himself to a piece of meat, hoping to be carried out. The merchants listened with wide eyes and open mouths, absolutely amazed by his courage and his adventures. They had never heard anything quite like it! They welcomed Sinbad warmly, sharing their food and water, and helping him gather even more beautiful diamonds. Sinbad, being very polite and fair, offered to share his finds with them, as they had, in a way, rescued him. But the merchants, seeing he had been through so much, gently refused, saying his life was worth more than any diamond. Instead, they were just happy to have a new friend and such an exciting story to tell. Sinbad felt a lovely warmth in his heart; he truly had found kind new friends. Together, they travelled for many days, out of the wondrous valley and through gentle, rolling hills. The sun shone down, and cheerful little birds sang in the trees as they walked. Sinbad loved hearing the merchants tell stories of their own travels, and he shared more of his incredible adventures, making them all laugh and gasp in equal measure. They saw lots of interesting things: tall, colourful trees with fruit he’d never seen before, and tiny, chattering monkeys swinging from branch to branch. Sometimes, they would stop by a clear stream to drink the cool, fresh water and eat some delicious biscuits and sweeties they carried in their satchels. Finally, after many long miles of walking and riding on friendly donkeys, they arrived at a bustling port city. Oh, it was a busy place! The air smelled of salt and spices, and the sounds of people calling out, ships creaking, and wooden carts rumbling filled the air. There were so many people, all dressed in bright, different colours, going about their day. Big ships with tall masts and colourful flags bobbed gently in the harbour, ready to sail to faraway lands. It felt exciting and full of life, a bit like Basra, but also wonderfully new. In this busy city, Sinbad carefully sold some of his biggest and brightest diamonds. With the money he received – many, many pounds – he bought himself new clothes, and some lovely gifts for his new merchant friends to thank them properly. He also booked passage on a fine, big ship that was due to set sail for Basra, his beloved home city! His heart felt like it was doing little happy dances inside his chest at the thought of going home. Home! The sea voyage back to Basra was long, but it was peaceful and full of gentle breezes. Sinbad spent his days watching the waves, sometimes spotting playful dolphins leaping out of the water, and talking to the friendly sailors. He helped them with little chores, learning how to tie different knots and how to hoist the big, white sails. He even helped them prepare some lovely British chips for supper one evening! The days turned into weeks, and with each passing day, Sinbad felt closer and closer to his home. He could almost smell the familiar scent of Basra in the air. And then, one beautiful morning, as the sun began to paint the sky with colours of orange and pink, a cry rang out from the ship’s lookout: “Land ahoy! Basra!” Sinbad rushed to the railing, his eyes filling with happy tears. There it was! The beautiful, familiar harbour of Basra, with its white buildings and green palm trees. He could see people moving about on the pavement, and even recognise some of the taller buildings he knew so well. A big lump formed in his throat; he was finally home! He had made it back, safe and sound, after so many adventures and challenges. When the ship docked, Sinbad practically leapt onto the land. He hurried through the lively streets, which felt so familiar and comforting, until he reached his own lovely flat. His family and friends were overjoyed to see him! There were hugs and laughter and perhaps a few happy tears. Sinbad told them all about his amazing journeys – the whale island, the giant Roc, the Valley of Diamonds, and his kind merchant friends. He showed them the remaining beautiful diamonds and shared his wealth, making sure everyone he loved was comfortable and happy. Sinbad was so grateful to be home. He knew he had seen so much of the world, more than many people could ever dream of. He had faced dangers, but he had also found great beauty and kindness. And for a while, he decided, he would enjoy the comforts of Basra, sharing his stories and his good fortune with everyone. What an adventure it had been! And who knows what other tales might be waiting for him in the future?
