Introduction
Hello there, little explorers! Have you ever wondered what might be hidden deep in the green, leafy woods? Today, we're off on an adventure to a cosy little cottage, home to a very special family. But what happens when a curious little girl with golden hair, called Goldilocks, wanders too close? She's about to discover some rather warm porridge, some wobbly chairs, and perhaps a very comfy bed. Join us now for the delightful tale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears!
The Bears' Breakfast
Well, in that cosy little cottage, nestled deep amongst the tall, green trees, lived three bears: Papa Bear, Mama Bear, and their little Baby Bear. Every morning, without fail, they loved to have a big, steaming bowl of warm, creamy porridge for their breakfast. Mama Bear, who was an excellent cook, had just made a very big pot of it. It was bubbling gently on the hob and smelt absolutely delicious, filling their little cottage with a lovely aroma! But oh dear, when they tried a little taste, it was far too hot to eat straight away! Papa Bear, with his big, booming voice, said, 'This porridge is simply too hot! We must wait for it to cool down a bit.' Mama Bear, always practical and clever, added, 'Let's go for a little stroll in the lovely, sunny woods while it cools. A nice, brisk walk will make us even hungrier!' So, the Three Bears put on their jackets and hats, carefully locked their front door, and off they went, into the green, leafy woods for their refreshing morning walk.
Goldilocks Arrives
Now, while the Three Bears were enjoying their lovely walk, a little girl called Goldilocks was also out exploring in the very same woods. She had beautiful golden, curly hair that shone like sunshine, and she was wearing a pretty blue dress with little white daisies on it. Goldilocks loved to explore, and sometimes, she wandered a little further than she probably should have. This particular morning, she was following a colourful butterfly, a beautiful Red Admiral, as it flitted from flower to flower, deeper and deeper into the forest, completely forgetting which way was home. Suddenly, the butterfly fluttered over a thick, thorny bush and vanished from sight! Goldilocks stopped, a little out of breath, and looked around. Everything seemed a bit different here. The trees were much taller, stretching their branches up to the sky, and the familiar path she usually followed had completely disappeared! That's when she spotted it – a sweet, little cottage, almost hidden away amongst the ancient oak trees. It had a bright red door and cheerful window boxes overflowing with sunny yellow flowers. Goldilocks had never, ever seen this cottage before, and she was awfully, awfully curious. 'Hmm,' she thought, putting a finger to her chin, 'I wonder who lives in such a perfectly lovely little house?' She tiptoed closer, her heart going a little 'thump-thump-thump' with excitement and a tiny bit of nervousness. She peeked through a window, shading her eyes, but couldn't see anyone inside. So, she knocked gently on the bright red door. 'Knock, knock!' she called out in her small voice. But there was no answer. She waited a moment, listening intently, then knocked a little louder. 'Hello? Is anyone home?' Still no reply. Not a peep. Now, Goldilocks was a very curious little girl indeed, perhaps a bit too curious sometimes! Seeing that the door was not properly latched, but just a tiny bit ajar, she pushed it open. It creaked ever so softly, like a sleepy kitten stretching after a long nap. And in she went, into the Bears' empty cottage, without a single 'by your leave' or 'may I come in'!
Chairs and Beds
Once inside, Goldilocks's eyes grew wide. What a cosy little cottage! Everything was so tidy, with pretty curtains at the windows and a lovely rug on the floor. But her tummy gave a little rumble. 'Oh dear,' she thought, 'I am rather hungry!' And just then, her nose caught a most wonderful smell – porridge! Freshly cooked, creamy, warm porridge! On the kitchen table sat three steaming bowls. A really, really big bowl, a medium-sized bowl, and a tiny, little bowl. Goldilocks, feeling a bit peckish, decided to try some. First, she picked up the biggest spoon and took a big spoonful from the really big bowl. 'Oh dear me!' she exclaimed, 'This porridge is far too hot!' She quickly put the spoon down, puffing out her cheeks. Next, she tried the porridge from the medium-sized bowl. 'Ugh!' she giggled. 'This porridge is far too cold! It's gone all lumpy and unappetising!' She wasn't a fan of cold porridge. Finally, she looked at the tiny, little bowl. 'Perhaps,' she thought, 'this one will be just right!' 'Oh, yes!' she whispered, her eyes sparkling. 'This porridge is absolutely perfect! Not too hot, not too cold, just lovely and warm and creamy!' And because it was so delicious, and because she was so very hungry, Goldilocks ate it all up! Every single spoonful, until the tiny bowl was completely empty. Not a single oat left! Now, with her tummy full and happy, Goldilocks started to feel a little bit tired. All that adventuring had certainly worn her out! She looked around the little cottage again. In the living room, beside a crackling fireplace, she spotted three chairs. Just like the bowls, there was a really, really big chair, a medium-sized chair, and a tiny, little chair. 'Oh, a sit down sounds lovely,' she thought. First, she climbed onto the really big chair. It was so grand, clearly belonging to Papa Bear. Goldilocks tried to snuggle into it, but it was so enormous and hard! 'Goodness me,' she mumbled, 'This chair is far too hard! It feels like sitting on a giant rock!' She couldn't get comfortable, so she carefully clambered down. Next, she tried the medium-sized chair. This one looked much softer, with a lovely embroidered cushion. It was Mama Bear's chair, you see. Goldilocks plumped herself down, hoping for a comfy rest. But oh dear! This chair was far too soft! She sank right down, almost disappearing into the cushions! 'I can't even see over the armrests!' she exclaimed, struggling to get out. So, she wiggled her way out of that one too and looked at the tiny, little chair. It was just the right size for a little girl, with a sweet, painted flower on its back. 'Please,' she wished, 'let this one be just right!' She gently sat down. 'Oh, yes!' she chirped happily, 'This chair is absolutely perfect!' It was firm enough to hold her but soft enough to be cosy. She wiggled her toes and leaned back, feeling very pleased. But Goldilocks was perhaps a little too wiggly, and the tiny chair wasn't quite as strong as the other two. There was a sudden CRACK! And then a BANG! And poor little Goldilocks tumbled right onto the floor, while the tiny chair broke into several pieces around her! Oh dear, Baby Bear's favourite chair, completely broken! Well, after all that excitement – eating delicious porridge and then accidentally breaking a chair – Goldilocks felt even more tired than before. 'I really must find somewhere to rest,' she thought, rubbing her eyes. She decided to explore a little further. She tiptoed out of the living room and found a staircase. Up, up, up she went, until she reached a landing with three doors. Opening the first door, she found herself in a lovely bedroom. And what did she see? You guessed it! Three beds! A really, really big bed, a medium-sized bed, and a tiny, little bed. 'Oh, a bed!' she sighed, 'That's exactly what I need!' First, she climbed onto the really big bed. This was Papa Bear's bed, of course. She tried to make herself comfortable, but it was so hard! It felt like sleeping on a board! 'Oh no,' she grumbled, 'This bed is far too hard! My head feels like it's resting on a brick!' She couldn't possibly sleep there. Next, she tried the medium-sized bed. This was Mama Bear's bed, with its soft, fluffy duvet and embroidered pillows. Goldilocks thought, 'This must be the one!' She bounced a little. But oh dear! This bed was far too soft! She sank so deep into the feathery mattress that she felt like she was drowning in clouds. 'It's like a big, squishy marshmallow!' she complained, trying to sit up. So, she got out of that one too, a little bit grumpy now. Then she saw the tiny, little bed. It had a cheerful checked blanket and a small, inviting pillow. 'Please,' she whispered, 'let this one be just right!' She climbed in, pulling the blanket up to her chin. And it was! 'Oh, this bed is absolutely perfect!' she murmured, snuggling down. It was just the right firmness, just the right size, and the pillow felt like a soft cloud made just for her head. She was so cosy, so warm, and so very, very tired. In just a few moments, Goldilocks closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and fell fast asleep, dreaming of fluffy clouds and delicious porridge. Zzzzzzzzz.
The Bears' Return
Meanwhile, out in the sunny woods, the Three Bears were finishing their morning stroll. Papa Bear chatted happily, Mama Bear hummed, and Baby Bear trotted along, looking forward to breakfast. "Oh, I do hope our porridge has cooled perfectly," said Mama Bear, "I'm feeling ever so peckish." "Indeed, my dear," rumbled Papa Bear. "A good walk always makes one appreciate a hearty bowl. Ours will be just right." Baby Bear mumbled, "Porridge, porridge, yummy porridge," imagining the sweet, creamy taste. Their little cottage was now in sight! As they drew closer, Papa Bear paused. He sniffed the air. Something felt... different. "Now, that's odd," he said, brow furrowing. "Did we leave the front door ajar, Mama Bear?" Mama Bear peered. "Why, I don't think so, Papa Bear. I'm quite sure I closed it properly." The door was open just a crack. The Three Bears exchanged worried glances. Papa Bear pushed the door open wider. The air inside was still and quiet. Too quiet. "Hello?" called Mama Bear, her voice a little wavery. No answer. Just the gentle tick-tock of the grandfather clock. They went straight into the kitchen, their tummies rumbling now from worry. And what did they see? Their three bowls of porridge were on the table. But something was definitely wrong. Papa Bear looked at his enormous bowl. "Someone's been tasting my porridge!" he growled. A spoon had been dipped in. Mama Bear stepped forward, looking at her medium-sized bowl. "And someone's been tasting my porridge!" she said, where a spoonful had been taken. Then, little Baby Bear toddled up to his tiny bowl. His bottom lip began to tremble. "Someone's been tasting my porridge," he whimpered, "And they've eaten it all UP!" His little bowl was completely, utterly empty! Not a single oat left, just a tiny drop of honey. Baby Bear burst into tears. "Waaah! My porridge is gone!" he cried. Papa Bear put a big paw around his son. "There, there, little one," he rumbled, though his voice sounded cross. Mama Bear, ever practical, said, "Perhaps they're still here? Let's check the sitting room." So, the Three Bears padded softly into their cosy sitting room. And what a sight greeted them there! Papa Bear went to his enormous armchair. "Someone's been sitting in my chair!" he declared. A clear indent remained. Mama Bear walked over to her medium-sized armchair. "And someone's been sitting in my chair!" she sighed. The cushion was definitely squashed. Then, little Baby Bear ran to his tiny chair. It wasn't lovely anymore. "Someone's been sitting in my chair," he cried, "And they've broken it all to bits!" His little yellow chair, his favourite, was shattered! Poor Baby Bear sat amongst the pieces, sobbing even louder. Papa Bear's fur bristled. "This is simply not on!" he growled. Mama Bear looked around, her face stern. "This is very rude indeed. Who could it be?" "Let's check upstairs," said Papa Bear, "Perhaps they've gone up to the bedrooms." So, up the wooden stairs they went, creak, creak, creak, tiptoeing. First, into Papa Bear's big bedroom. Papa Bear strode to his enormous bed. "Someone's been lying in my bed!" he announced. The duvet was rumpled. Next, Mama Bear peeked into her bedroom. She gasped. "And someone's been lying in my bed!" she whispered. The quilt was pulled back. Finally, very slowly, the Three Bears crept into Baby Bear's tiny, cosy bedroom. Baby Bear padded to his small bed. "Someone's been lying in my bed," he said. Then, he gasped. "And here she is!" he cried. For there, sound asleep in Baby Bear's bed, with her golden curls spread out, was Goldilocks! She looked so peaceful. Papa Bear let out a quiet grunt. "Well, I never!" he rumbled. Mama Bear put a paw to her mouth. "Oh, my goodness," she whispered. "A little girl!" Baby Bear was no longer crying. He just looked at Goldilocks, his eyes wide. She really did look very comfortable. Just then, Goldilocks stirred. Her eyelashes fluttered. She opened her eyes. And what a shock she got! Instead of clouds, she saw three enormous, furry faces staring right at her! Papa Bear, Mama Bear, and Baby Bear, all looking very surprised. Goldilocks's eyes went wide. She sat bolt upright. And with a little scream of fright, she leapt out of Baby Bear's bed!
